Picaridin Lotion vs Spray: Which Form Actually Works Better?
Short answer: Neither, at the same concentration and dose. In a 12-hour trial against lone star tick nymphs, 20% picaridin spray and 20% picaridin lotion showed no difference in effectiveness, and the authors called them of equivalent efficacy. Concentration and the amount on your skin do most of the work; in that trial the container did not change the result.
Is picaridin lotion or spray better?
Neither, once the concentration and the dose are held equal. The one direct test we have is a 2010 trial by Carroll and colleagues in the Journal of Medical Entomology, run over 12 hours against nymphs of the lone star tick. On picaridin it found one thing: there was no difference in effectiveness between the 20% spray and 20% lotion formulations. The gap was not statistically significant, and the authors concluded that the spray and lotion formulations of picaridin were of equivalent efficacy.
How the repellents went on matters. Carroll's team applied lotion and cream with a nitrile-gloved hand and spray with a pipette, to ensure a measured and even application over the surface being treated. No one misted from a can at arm's length, so in the picaridin arm the concentration and the dose were the same on both sides.
The same paper shows why most lotion-versus-spray comparisons prove nothing. Its IR3535 arm used a spray and a lotion at different concentrations, and the authors wrote that because of this, no conclusions can be drawn about which type of application was more effective. One trial against one tick species is not a literature, and it says nothing about mosquitoes. What it does show is that when concentration and dose were held equal, the container stopped mattering.
What actually decides how long you are protected?
Concentration, the amount you put on, and how much of it survives your day. The CDC's Yellow Book puts concentration first: in general, higher concentrations of active ingredients provide longer duration of protection, regardless of the active ingredient. A 2018 paper by Goodyer and Schofield in the Journal of Travel Medicine calls applied dosage one important variable in determining the persistence of a repellent experienced by users.
Coverage is where people go wrong in both directions. The CDC tells travelers to use just enough repellent to cover exposed skin or clothing, says heavy application and saturation are generally unnecessary for effectiveness, and adds that if biting insects do not respond to a thin film, apply a bit more. The American Academy of Pediatrics says the same about children: using more does not make the repellent more effective. Under-applying fails the other way. EPA's guidance is to apply the amount indicated by the label, since if you do not follow the label directions, the product may not be as effective as you expect.
Then the day gets a vote. The CDC says product efficacy and duration of protection are markedly affected by ambient temperature, level of activity, amount of perspiration, exposure to water, being rubbed off during activities, and other factors. Sweat does not check which container the repellent came from.
Where do the hours on a repellent label come from?
From a test of that exact product on human skin, run to an EPA guideline. EPA's product performance guideline for skin-applied repellents says repellent efficacy should be tested using the end-use formulation as registered or as proposed for registration. The objective of most of that testing, in EPA's words, is to estimate how long after treatment a repellent will continue to protect users from the target pest, measured as Complete Protection Time. EPA also says there are variations in the resulting protection times because of differences in the testing conditions. EPA now allows manufacturers to apply to add a graphic on skin-applied repellent labels communicating the repellency time for mosquitoes and ticks.
The part nobody expects: EPA measures the dose differently for a lotion and a spray. The guideline says recommended methods for choosing the standard dose depend in part on the active ingredients and formulations of the test material. For a lotion, the applied quantity can be determined by weighing the container before and after use. For a spray, a different method is needed, because less than all the spray released from a pump-spray or aerosol container will reach the target limb, and in that method skin is left exposed between bracelets to help subjects determine when they achieve complete coverage.
Either way, the guideline says subjects in repellency trials should all be treated at the same standard dose rate, with consistent application and uniform coverage. Do lotions really show longer hours on EPA labels?
At the 14-hour mark, yes, and that is our own reading of EPA's data rather than anything EPA has said. In our read of EPA's database of skin-applied repellents, 4 of 631 products reach a 14-hour mosquito protection figure, and all four are 20% picaridin lotions. The median mosquito protection time among the 337 products that state one is 8 hours. Both counts are on the Index's statistics page, tallied from EPA's data as mirrored on August 18, 2026, so check there first.
For scale, the American Academy of Pediatrics says 20% picaridin can provide protection for 8 to 12 hours, and 5% for 3 to 4 hours. Concentration is doing the work in that sentence.
Now the caveat that keeps this honest. Four lotions at the 14-hour mark is a market observation, not proof that the lotion form causes longer protection. Formulation is not always neutral, either. The CDC says sustained-release or controlled-release (microencapsulated) formulations, even with lower active ingredient concentrations, might provide longer protection times. What the data does not say is that any lotion beats any spray.

Why do sprays come with instructions that lotions do not?
Because some of a spray never reaches your skin, and none of it has to travel through the air first with a lotion. EPA's repellent guidance has lines that apply to one form only. When using sprays, do not spray directly into the face; spray on hands first and then apply to face. Do not spray in enclosed areas. Avoid breathing a spray product. All three are written for sprays. There is no lotion version of any of them.
The National Pesticide Information Center explains why: picaridin may be inhaled when sprays are used around the body, especially in indoor spaces where the vapors may remain for some time. The American Academy of Pediatrics gives parents the same two rules, use spray repellents in open areas to avoid breathing them in, and avoid sprays in pressurized containers if children might accidentally inhale them or get them into their eyes.
Read this as an asymmetry rather than a warning. The trial in the first section found spray and lotion equal once the dose was controlled.
Which form should you hand a kid?
A stick, a lotion or an unpressurized spray, in the American Academy of Pediatrics' words. The AAP tells parents to choose products in the form of sticks, lotions or unpressurized sprays, listed together, with no ranking. What it steers away from is sprays in pressurized containers if children might accidentally inhale them or get them into their eyes, and it says to use spray repellents in open areas to avoid breathing them in.
Two more AAP rules apply whichever form you pick. Use just enough repellent to cover your child's clothing and exposed skin, since using more does not make it more effective. And do not put insect repellent directly on your child's face: the AAP's instruction is to spray a little on your hands first and then rub it on, avoiding the eyes and mouth. How does picaridin compare with DEET on skin?
The question assumes a ranking the evidence does not hand out, so here are the picaridin facts on their own. The National Pesticide Information Center's fact sheet says picaridin has been widely used as an insect repellent in Europe and Australia, but has only been available in the United States since 2005. In humans, less than 6% of the picaridin applied to skin was absorbed, and rats and humans excrete almost all of it in their urine within a day of exposure.
NPIC's technical fact sheet also reports that researchers noted no dermal irritation on the backs of human subjects following the application of 20% picaridin aerosol, 20% picaridin lotion, or technical grade picaridin. The study covered the 20% aerosol and the 20% lotion alike.

How should you apply either form?
Thin, even and complete, at the amount the label says. EPA's instruction is to read and follow the label directions, be sure you understand how much to apply, and apply the amount indicated by the label, because if you do not follow the label directions the product may not be as effective as you expect. The CDC's version: just enough to cover exposed skin, and a bit more if biting insects do not respond to a thin film.
For the face, both forms go on through your palms. EPA's rule for sprays is do not spray directly into the face; spray on hands first and then apply to face.
