Every skin-applied insect repellent registered with the U.S. EPA, in numbers: 631 products, their protection times, active ingredients, registration lineage and what their federal labels disclose. Every figure on this page is computed from the dataset below at build time, and the full dataset is free to download and reuse with attribution.

Key numbers

4 of 631: products reach a 14-hour mosquito protection figure in EPA’s data. All four are 20% picaridin lotions.
294 of 631: products (47%) list no mosquito protection time at all in EPA’s consumer search tool.
293 of 505: DEET products (58%) show no mosquito protection time in EPA’s data.

379 of 384: federal labels with an ingredient statement (99%) name only the active ingredient. Federal rules require nothing more.
169 of 631: products (27%) state a tick protection time. The median is 5 hours.
22.6%: is the median DEET concentration; the highest on file is 98.3%.
47 of 631: labels carry a stated protection time against no-see-ums (biting midges).
1973: is the year of the oldest federal label still on file (Insect Repellent 119).

Methodology

Source. EPA’s consumer database of skin-applied repellents, mirrored 2026-08-18, joined with each product’s federal label PDF from EPA’s Pesticide Product Label System. No manufacturer data, no affiliate relationships.

Formula families. A three-part registration number (for example 44446-30-40698) is EPA’s format for a supplemental distribution: the same registered formula sold under another name. Family counts come from that numbering system, nothing else.

“No stated time.” Means EPA’s consumer tool lists no protection duration for that product and pest. It is a statement about the database entry, not about the product’s performance.
