Is Permethrin Safe Around Pets?
Short answer: Permethrin around pets is label-specific and species-specific. NPIC says permethrin is used in some dog products, but cats are more sensitive because their bodies take a long time to break it down. Do not apply clothing permethrin to skin or pets, keep cats away from wet treated items, and follow the product label.
One active, many labels
Permethrin shows up in different worlds: clothing treatments, mosquito control, livestock products, and some dog products. NPIC says it is used in cattle ear tags, flea collars, and spot-on treatments for dogs. The same active ingredient does not erase label differences. A clothing treatment is not a pet treatment.
The cat exception is not small print
NPIC is direct: cats are more sensitive to permethrin than dogs or people because it takes their bodies a long time to break it down. It also says cats accidentally exposed to high, 45 to 65 percent, permethrin products may seem anxious, may not walk normally, may have muscle tremors and seizures, and may die.
Licking changes the exposure
NPIC says dogs and cats with permethrin on their skin may act strangely, flick paws, twitch skin or ears, or roll on the ground. Animals that have licked treated skin may drool a lot or smack their lips. That is why the label, drying time, and pet exclusion during application are not decorative.
Clothing use is its own lane
The CDC says permethrin can be used on boots, clothing, and camping gear, or you can buy treated clothing and gear. The CDC also says not to use permethrin products directly on skin. Around pets, that same separation matters: fabric product on fabric, pet product on the labeled pet, no improvising.
